The “Other Maine” Project of Aid for Kids began in 2007 – with the purpose of making life better for children and their families – and has grown rapidly every year since. Exclusive to the State of Maine, this program distributes new articles of clothing including, winter coats, pajamas, and diapers along with essential household items, school supplies, books for children to take home, and many other necessary items.

Distribution primarily occurs via our 150 Non-Profit distribution partners and title I schools throughout the State of Maine – chiefly in the rural counties of Aroostook and Washington. Staff and teachers from non-profit agencies and schools pick up merchandise from our large distribution center in Houlton or volunteers will take merchandise to them.

Dannette Ellis, Program Director, her husband, and children also volunteer and do most of the work unloading pallets of goods from “big rigs,” sorting merchandise and fulfillment of goods for the economically disadvantaged in Maine – our neighbors.  An example of Dannette’s “magic” are these figures from 2017:  $1,434,542.20 (market value of new merchandise) received from our suppliers with only $12,484.98 paid for shipping and handling costs (including membership fees). In 2017 The United Way of Aroostook County presented the “Other Maine” Program with the “Agency Partner of the Year” award.
Many thanks to the numerous foundations and charitable trusts that have provided funds so that the “Other Maine” Program can help the economically disadvantaged in Maine.
